ISED Releases Updated Wireless Power Transfer Standard: RSS-216 Issue 3

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has released Issue 3 of RSS-216, updating the standards for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) devices. This new version brings several key changes aimed at modernizing and clarifying the regulations for these technologies

Key Updates:

  1. Increased Separation Distances: For electric vehicle WPT systems, the separation distance has been raised from 10 cm to 50 cm. For other WPT devices, it has been increased from 10 cm to 20 cm.

  2. Expanded Frequency Range: The maximum operating frequency has been extended from 400 MHz to 40 GHz, with added limits for emissions above 1 GHz.

  3. Medical Device Requirements: The new standard removes the need for extra instructions from ISED for medical devices and introduces specific requirements for WPT devices used in or on the human body.

  4. Adoption of ANSI Standards: The updated RSS-216 now incorporates ANSI C63.30-2021 standards with some deviations.

  5. Regulatory Alignment: The standard clarifies that it should be used alongside RSS-Gen and/or ICES-Gen.

  6. Power Voltage Clarifications: New guidelines address devices with multiple or wide power voltage ranges.

  7. ISM Equipment Definition: The standard provides a clearer definition of what qualifies as industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) equipment.

  8. Direct Limits: Instead of referring to ICES-001, RSS-216 Issue 3 includes limits directly within the document.

  9. Alternative Limits: New alternative limits based on RSS-210 are introduced under specific conditions.

  10. RF Exposure: It refers to RSS-102 for radio-frequency exposure requirements.

This update aims to streamline the regulatory process by consolidating WPT device standards into one comprehensive document, enhancing clarity and convenience for manufacturers and users alike.
